Executive Summary
This report presents our investigations into the technological and economic analysis of inserting
alternative Automatic identification technologies (AITs), including Radio Frequency
Identification (RFID) and other wireless sensor networks towards improving ramp operations at
the Tinker AFB. It was observed that no one technology can be a complete solution to address
the range of identification and monitoring issues pertinent to Tinker AFB operations. Therefore
we have reviewed a large variety of the available AITs for consideration in AFB ramp
operations. Our investigations are presented in three parts: First we report the framework
developed for economic evolution of these technologies. This spreadsheet framework has been
designed to match the depot and ramp operations germane to Tinker AFB operations. Next we
review various alternative AITs that are attractive for insertion at different operational
subsystems, and provide the necessary cost information. We also recommend follow up actions
involving more focused investigations that lead to pilot implementations of AITs for asset
tracking in certain specific ramp operation. The last part provides a comprehensive list of the
relevant AIT and other related wireless technologies beyond those currently considered for ramp
operations. The document, we hope will serve as a means to approach the insertion of AITs as
part of certain ramp operations.
